Here is my newest concoction as a twist to overnight oats -- overnight Chia Seed Yogurt ! This recipe is packed with nutrients for sustained energy ALL morning long . . . Here's HOW & a little bit about WHY this quick and easy breakfast is so totally good for you !
What you'll need & WHY :
1. Greek Yogurt
: packed with about 13 g of protein per snack size container or a heaping 23 g per cup . . . This is such a protein packed option for any meal or snack ! I usually go with my favorite brands Siggis (with minimal sugars), Trader Joe's brand, Wegmans brand, or Chobani because what really is the difference besides a few grams or sugar here and there ? BUT here is the why to choosing plain greek yogurt when it comes to grams of sugar per serving -- Sure, it is pretty tart, but when mixed with fresh fruit and natural sweeteners like agave or maple syrup there is no need to have the added processed sugars of fruit flavored yogurts ! PLUS fresh fruit contains added fiber to keep you fuller longer . . . seems like a WIN to me !
2. Chia Seeds
: If you haven't heard of this anceint super food then it's about time you read up on it ! Chia seeds are these microscopic (lol jk; you can see them with the naked eye) black little beads that are an excellent source of Protein, Fiber, Magnesium, Calcium and ALA a type of Omega-3 Fatty Acid all of which can be very difficult to come by in today's American diet. So next time your trying to bulk up your smoothie bowl add about 1 tablespoon of these bad boys for a nice calorie punch, and helpful release of carbohydrates into the body !
3. Organic Blueberries
: I'll be honest ... up until last week I never bought organic produce, but now that I have bought organic blueberries I truly see the difference in taste ! So fresh and naturally sweet. Like I said earlier -- fresh fruit contains much more fiber and natural sugars than any fruit flavored greek yogurt ever will ! PLUS you get added Vitamins and Minerals, and a punch of antioxidants to help with free radical damage -- this includes digestive damage, skin damage, and your immune system.
4. Granola
: So if you are anything like me and the sweetness from the fresh fruit just isn't cutting it I highly suggest adding granola ! BUT careful... chose wisely or it may be just as likely that you are adding more sugar into your yogurt than if you just bought the fruit flavored greek yogurt instead ! I try to buy granola that is extremely natural, usually organic, and contains a large amount of whole grains to help add to my intake for the day. Yes, I know this stuff is amazing, but there are usually great brands out there that make granola that is good for you & tastes equally as good ! Even better, make your own bomb granola recipe at home with oats, maple syrup, raw nuts, cinnamon, and dried fruit !
5. Nut Butter
: I don't really have a favorite brand of nut butter, but there are definitely choices I keep readily available in my pantry ! I know all these ingredients are fairly healthy to begin with, but to me a health is about enjoying good food as it is brought to us on earth, and PB or nut butters are no exception to this rule ! So when I say my "favorites" I mean the nut butters that taste good, and are great for me -- Crazy Richard's PB contains only one ingredient . . . Peanuts ... Who would have thunk ? | Trader Joe's brand unsalted raw almond butter . . . no salt with an awesome roasted almond flavor | Wild Friends Peanut Butter . . . extremely natural nut butter with minimal ingredients | Don't Go Nuts brand roasted soy butter for those with a nut allergy . . . this stuff is amazing and comes in so many delightful flavors !
This recipe for Chia Seed Yogurt (Blueberry & PB Swirl) is so versatile . . . SO have fun with your yogurt creations and be sure to send me your breakfast pictures via email or on instagram with #soyumsofun !
